Gustave Doré
Gustave Doré (1832/1883) was a French illustrator, printmaker, painter and sculptor. He was the most famous master of liturgical art and undoubtedly one of the 19th century's most prodigious artists.
He produced hundreds of high-quality illustrations of Biblical events in his lifetime. They were used in Bibles in 19th-century Europe.
Gustave Doré provided illustrations for great works (The Bible, Dante, Rabelais, Perrault, Cervantes, Milton, Shakespeare, Hugo, Balzac, Poe, etc.).
He thus greatly influenced the contemporary imagination, from Van Gogh to Terry Gilliam.
He was internationally renowned during his lifetime.
